The Bread of Life

In this chapter, Jesus performed one of His most amazing miracles. He multiplied five loaves and two fish to feed five thousand with lots of leftovers. The next day the crowd focused on receiving more miraculous bread. Jesus tried to shift their focus to the bread of life. Jesus is the life we need. In the same way food gives life to our physical bodies, Jesus came to give us Himself, spiritual food, that we might have abundant life today and for eternity.

Reflection:

The crowd wanted Jesus to prove Himself on their terms. It’s like “Jesus, I’ll trust you if…” Is there something that is holding you back from relying on the bread of life? Give it to God now and then tell someone you trust so they can pray for you.

Makes me think of the 3 Hebrews who wouldn't worship the statue of the king. They say "our God will save us and even if he doesn't we will never bow down." such a great example of resolve and unconditional trust.

After being sick for years, God showed me how my heart after God was a lot conditional "Jesus, I'll trust you if you give me an easy life for doing good." I really needed to learn about the sovereignty of God.

This chapter is so crazy. Jesus is so audacious. Jesus goes from feeding everyone miraculously and they all want to make him king. Then he tells them don't focus on physical food focus on spiritual food. Then he tells them he is food from heaven. Then he just pushes it over the edge and says you have to eat my flesh and drink my blood- and most everyone leaves him cause they are kosher Jews and think that's so gross. Jesus so didn't care about being popular. He tested the hearts so it would be revealed what was truly in them.

When I was sick and confused and wanted to loose my faith I could have quoted when Peter said, "Where would I go?" if I didn't choose to believe in Jesus. God had surrounded me with too much evidence of Him to walk away from Him.

God make my heart after yours always. Choose me.

My anger and pride debuted a new cocky face this week, and that's what's kept me from fully relying on God. If Jesus asked me how we were going to feed 5,000 MEN, plus women and kids, I probably would have rolled my eyes and spit fire and sass before ditching (v5&6). Good job Philip, at least you didn't ditch. Yup, been one of those weeks.

“All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out" (v37). It was hard to come to Jesus for His living bread when I just wanted to wallow in moldy bread. But I fought myself to go to Him and He didn't slap my head although I deserved it. He spoke truth to my heart and set me free from bitterness. Unfortunately someone else pissed me off yesterday so I had to run back to Jesus! I'm so glad He "certainly won't cast me out" but is willing to feed my soul with life!

I really like the story of Jesus walking on the water. It seems to me to be an example of my life. The disciples wanted to move on, go to the next adventure but Jesus wasnt ready yet so they decide to just go. And what happens? They encounter a storm and are stuck out in the rough seas rowing fruitlessly to get to shore. Then Jesus shows up, He climbs into the boat and all is well! That's how I lived. Go through life not waiting on the Lord to direct me, have problems that overwhelm me, Jesus shows up and all is well! Thankfully I've been learning to wait on Him and Jesus is always in my boat!!

Yes and no because I trust God with my life but I do ask God for signs or to make things clear when making major decisions. Jesus’s teaching about eating his flesh and drinking his blood would have been kind of hard to swallow. I’m not really sure why he confused people this way, I mean why not say “spiritually speaking” you need to eat my flesh and drink my blood before he said it instead of explaining it after. But if there is one thing I know, it’s that Jesus always did exactly what he wanted to do and got the reaction that he wanted to get, so I hope that since we have the Holy Spirit we will be able to discern between the crazy people from the truly anointed.

Understanding vs. Trusting
That's how I viewed this chapter.
Feeding five thousand. Walking on water. Had I been among those people and saw these miracles myself, would I believe?
They started arguing when Jesus taught about eating His flesh and drinking His blood. It was literal understanding vs. spiritual belief.
“Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.” They answered, “Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you. What can you do?”‭‭John‬ ‭6:29-30‬
My understanding is so limited. I get it about only seeing the float in front of me and not the whole parade. If I know God sees the big picture, that understanding or lack therof needs to turn to trust. Trust will provide the revelation of what God is trying to teach me at this time in my life.
The ones who trusted believed He was the Bread of Life. The other disciples left Him.
